Mideast update

Obama is now leaving the military option on the table and saying he can’t tell the I$raelis what to do about their security via Iran.(1) Meanwhile Syria and I$rael are trading accusations that the other side does not want to negotiate.

According to “Haaretz,” Egypt is taking a position so extreme that even Abbas aide Yasser Abed Rabbo thinks it’s too anti-Hamas.(2) Egypt wants to open the crossings to Gaza if Abbas’s Fatah faction has complete control of the Palestinian government.

By Tuesday, if all this keeps up, it will be clear that Iran is going to be involved. Hopefully then the factions can agree among themselves. Hamas has said they can agree to everything except recognizing I$rael.

The missing piece is what the United $tates will do to bring Iran to the table. By bringing Iran to the table, the United $tates should also let the Palestinians keep or dump Fayyad or anyone else as a matter of their internal horse-trading once Iran is involved. This will all be a matter of interpretation,(3) difficult for outsiders to understand, but it’s important to let Palestinians horse-trade like normal bourgeois politicians.
